Omicron - the new SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern

It is not yet clear whether the Omicron variant is more transmissible or leads to more severe COVID-19 disease than the previously known variants. Studies on this are underway. Initial analyses from South Africa show that COVID-19-associated hospitalization rates have increased in South Africa, but this could also be due to the general increase in COVID-19 infection rates. Similarly, initial data indicate that the risk of corona infection with the omicron variant may be higher in vaccinated and recovered individuals than with the previously known VOCs, but this too is still being clarified.
